Renowned singer and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Abrar ul Haq has been appointed as the new chairman of Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS).
Abrar ul Haq’s appointment was earlier challenged by former chief of PRCS Saeed Elahi who filed a petitioned against the singer and asked the court to null and void the appointment of the new chairman as, according to the contract, his job period was to remain till March 2020.
“He [Saeed Elahi] filed a petition against his [Abrar ul Haq’s] appointment, citing reasons that his claim to the Chairman position lasted till March 09, 2020,” said the counsel of PTI leader.
The counsel further said Elahi held in the petition that appointing any new chairman before the specified date was ‘illegal’.
Abrar ul Haq’s counsel added that the petitioner [Saeed Elahi] held the stance that there is a conflict of interest in the appointment of the PTI leader as he is already running another charity known as Sahara Foundation.
In the petition, Saeed Elahi further argues that:
“I was not provided with any valid reasons for my removal as the Chairman of Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS). I am supposed to remain the PRCS chief till March 2020. Therefore, I request the honorable court to nullify the appointment Abrar ul Haq as the new chairman.”
The petition by the former chief of PRCS was entertained by a two-member bench headed by Chief Justice Islamabad High Court Athar Minallah. The bench, after hearing arguments presented by lawyers from the government and the petitioner, announced the verdict and upheld the appointment of Abrar ul Haq.
The bench also invalidated the interim order that suspended the appointment notification of Haq as PRCS chairman.
It is pertinent to mention here that President Dr. Arif Alvi, in his capacity as head of the PRCS, removed Saeed Elahi as Chairman over allegations of corruption and nepotism.
